Every center or forward player must be very familiar with the hook shot. They usually use this kind of shot in a one on one situation to avoid being blocked by the opponent. The main purpose of hook shot is to create a distance between the ball and the opponent. When you use a hook shot, you have to use your feeling to measure where the ball will drop. It is harder than regular shooting technique because you have to shoot the ball from behind your head.
How to do a hook shot?
- Post up until you find the best position. Use your pivoting technique.
- While one hand keeps the opponent from reaching the ball, use your other hand to hold the ball.
- Take a jump.
- Shoot the basketball by swinging the entire arm and snapping the wrist with a follow through.
The basic of hook shot is to create a distance between the ball and your opponent. The hand you are using to shoot is the same side with the leg that comes up first when jumping.
